Reduction of Risk Over Time

Chart of the Week for August 31-September 6, 2001

The above chart shows the S&P 500 Index’s range of returns for various time horizons since 1926. Investors who held stocks for one-year periods received returns ranging from a 54% gain to a 43% loss. But those who held stocks for twenty years received as much as 18% per year and never less than 3%. It’s important for investors to remember the market may fluctuate in the short-run, sometimes wildly, but returns tend to stabilize in the long-run.
