Small and Mid Cap Led the Way (Again)

Chart of the Week for July 27-August 2, 2001

Investors showed a preference for small and mid-cap stocks in the second quarter; the S&P SmallCap 600 Index and the S&P MidCap 400 Index rose 13.7% and 13.2% respectively. Larger stocks, represented by the S&P 500 Index, rose 5.9% marking the fourth consecutive quarter this benchmark has underperformed small- and mid-cap issues. Notably, growth stocks led value stocks across all market capitalization ranges for the first time since the first quarter of 2000.
